WTO/ATC

  • The Textile and Clothing Agreement (ATC) is part of the Marrakech agreement (W.T.O.) to secure the integration of the textiles and clothing sector into the GATT on the basis of strengthened GATT rules and disciplines.
  • Developed countries will dismantle the quota system by 31.12.2004 and in exchange developing countries should offer a better market access to developed countries exporters to their markets.
  • Experience shows that, while developed countries fulfilled their obligations, developing countries are far from reducing barriers to trade and thus protect their national markets. (see sub-field Market Access)
  • Favour coherence in the Trade & Development provisions for the textile and clothing industry to be negotiated in the new round.
